Black History month traditionally runs in February, but Albuquerque kicks off the celebration for 2011 on Saturday, January 29. Dr. Michael Dyson, the "Hip Hop Professor," is the featured speaker at the UNM Africana Studies' Annual Black History Month Kick-Off Brunch, which begins at 11 a.m.

Dyson is a best-selling author, scholar and cultural critic whose scholarship helped establish the field of Black American cultural studies. Currently, he is a distinguished professor of sociology at Georgetown University.
