This past weekend kicked off the beginning of the holiday season, with the River of Lights opening at the Botanic Gardens and the first of many Nutcracker performances.

This weekend, the fifth annual Festival of Trees takes place at Sandia Casino. Decorated trees are sold to the highest bidder and the proceeds benefit the Carrie Tingley Foundation, which helps special needs kids. This year's event is expected to raise more than $100,000, with 95% of monies going directly to supporting the kids.

The free event features live holiday entertainment, uniquely decorated trees and a visit from Santa Claus. At an arts and crafts area, kids can craft ornaments to decorate a tree for the children getting care at Carrie Tingley Hospital. And if you're looking for items to purchase, there will be wreaths and trees available for just that. Festival of Trees runs November 30 - December 2, 2012.

Though the event begins Friday, November 30, there will be a special fundraising Jingle and Mingle on Thursday, November 29 at the Sandia Resort at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person. The evening previews this year's trees and also features a silent auction, live entertainment, dancing and appetizers. This is your opportunity to buy early. Tickets for the Jingle and Mingle can be purchased online.
