I've got a couple of New Year's resolutions that are a bit different from years past. I'd like to try some new adventures this year to challenge myself. One of my first goals is to try snowshoeing in the Sandias. Snowshoeing takes the beauty of a winter day and mixes it up with some challenging walking on a bit of snow.
New Mexico has a few special snowshoeing events. On January 19, the Sandia Snowshoe race takes place atop the Sandia Mountains. It's Albuquerque's only snowshoe race. Think you can traverse the 3.2 miles on a pair of snowshoes? You don't have to own a pair; pick up some rental shoes at Routes, Rentals & Tours or at REI.
The same weekend, January 19 - 21, the annual New Mexico Chile Classic takes place in Chama. There will be a snowshoe race, but there will also be races for cross country skiing and other family oriented events. There's even a dogsled race. Their chile/chili contest intrigues me. New Mexicans know the true spelling of chile is with an e!
What are your New Year resolutions?
