I'd never heard of vinegar pie before discovering Black Bird Pies in Albuquerque. It's supposed to be a southern dish, but I've also read it was a pie the pioneers made when the fruit ran out. Don't let the name put you off, as it tastes a lot like a chess pie. Find it in town, along with the more popular coconut cream, apple, and chocolate silk. There's even a local baker who dishes up green chile apple and chocolate pecan red chile pies. Now those are pies I might have to try.
See who is baking what in my article on Albuquerque pies.
