March usually blows in with some light winds. It also sees us shaking our winter clothes and getting out more. Here are some highlights of what's happening around town in Albuquerque for the month of March. These are events that occur year after year. Be sure to check the website to confirm information. The calendar activities are family friendly unless otherwise indicated. I'll mention it if the event is free.

Income Tax Assistance
Get tax assistance at one of the various city senior centers. Make an appointment for help from a volunteer tax assistant. Free service, paperwork required.

Carnaval Celebration
A spectacle that blends music and dance and adds costumes. See it at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Fiery Foods and BBQ Show
There's something fun and fiesty about grazing the aisles at this show, seeing how much heat your tongue can take. This show is dedicated to the many kinds of chile peppers and the products they make. Find out how to cook them and discover the ones that end up in sauce bottles and salsas. There are cooking demonstrations, cookbooks, cooking products and lots of chile products.

Swan Lake
The Ballet Repertory Theater's spring performance is the classic German tale about a girl who is turned into a swan. Set to Tchaikovsky's music, see it performed at the KiMo downtown.

Cats
The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the Jellicle choice. Cats is the second longest running show in Broadway history. See the show at the Albuquerque Little Theatre.

New Mexico Gun Collector's Association Gun, Sword and Knife Show
The show at the New Mexico Expo features weaponry of all kinds. Anyone under 18 must be with a guardian.

Women and Creativity Month
There are workshops, shows, talks and so much more happening all month long in honor of women and the creative process. Events take place at several places, to include the National Hispanic Cultural Center and the Harwood Art Center.

First Sundays at Natural History Museum
The first Sunday of each month, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is free to New Mexico residents. Take a guided tour of the museum's exhibits at 1:30. From 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., see displays and demos by some of Albuquerque's future scientists. The family friendly event is free. This month's event features Future Scientist Day.

Twelfth Night
The Aquila Theatre Company presents Shakespeare's comedy about identical twins, mistaken identity, and love. See it at Popejoy Hall.

First Friday ARTScrawl
With over 20 different galleries throughout the city participating, you can choose which ones to visit to find out what's happening with guilds, individual artists and ongoing shows. This is a free event.

Crazy for Swayze
A tribute to Patrick Swayze will screen his films at the KiMo Theatre. See The Outsiders March 7; Red Dawn March 21 and Dirty Dancing March 28. In April, see Road House April 4 and Ghost April 11. Popcorn is a mere $1.

Bogart Films

High School Reunion Cabaret
The New Mexico Gay Men's Chorus will perform songs that recall a high school reunion. See it at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Songs will be sung by soloists, duos, ensembles and the full chorus.

March Madness
Spring comes early to the Botanic Garden, where colorful blooms provide a spring show.

Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival
The Rio Grande Arts and Crafts Festival has 200 craftsmen and artists showing their work in mediums such as jewelry, pottery, woodworking, clothing and many kinds of handicrafts. There will also be food, kids' activities, artist demonstrations, entertainment and more. See the website for a $1 off coupon. At the New Mexico Expo.

Lynn Harrell Plays Tchikovsky
Joshua Weilerstein conducts Ligeti's Romanian Concerto. Guest artist Lynn Harrell performs Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, followed by the New Mexico Philharmonic performing Mendelssohn. See it at Popejoy Hall.

Banff Mountain Film Festival
The festival features a collection of the most inspiring action, environmental and adventure films from the Banff Festival. See it on tour at the KiMo Theatre.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
See a parody of classical ballet as performed by men in drag. The playful and entertaining show is at Popejoy Hall.

The Pink Floyd Experience
The popular and influential rock band brought amazing shows to the stage. This show will recreate the Pink Floyd experience for a mind blowing experience. See it at the Legends Theater at Route 66 Casino.

You'll find gems and minerals galore all weekend, along with experts and equipment at the New Mexico Expo.

Max Gomez
The singer songwriter from Taos has been compared to John Prine and Jackson Browne. Hear his storytelling songs at the Outpost Performance Space.

The ABQ Home Expo
Whether you're considering purchasing a home, building one, or improving where you live, there are exhibitors on hand to answer your questions and show the latest in home building and improvement. Tickets can be purchased at the event or online; price break for online tickets. It's at New Mexico Expo.

St. Patrick’s Day
Find out where to go on and around the day that celebrates good luck, a bit of blarnery and lots of green cheer. There are St. Patrick's events happening almost all month long.

A collective of women artists present stories of childhood, love, loss, and growing older. See it at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

The Addams Family

Daffodil Days
Find daffodils for sale around town and buy a few to support the programs at Presbyterian Home Healthcare. Proceeds go to families in need. Daffodils can be found at 26 sales site locations in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.

Southwest Chocolate and Coffee Fest
If you love coffee and/or chocolate, you won't want to miss the Southwest Chocolate and Coffee Fest. Taste free samples, meet vendors, and purchase some of the best local chocolate and coffee around. You'll find it at Expo New Mexico.

Solar Sundays
See the sun through a large (safe) telescope, and enjoy bilingual activities for the whole family. Solar Sundays happen the second Sunday of each month at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Activities are included in admission price.

Portland Cello Project
The Portland Cello Project will perform at the Outpost Performance Space. The PCP is a group of musicians that play all kinds of music, with cellos. There will be two performances, the first, Goodbye Winter, takes place at 5:30 p.m., and Hello Spring at 8:30 p.m.

Opera Southwest: Bizet's The PearlFishers
The fully staged opera with orchestra presents a novel work by a young Bizet. See it at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Roger Melone conducts.

Shen Yun
The classic dance and music of China comes to Popejoy Hall. The show features ancient legends, ethnic folk dances, battle drums and vocalists against animated backdrops.

Nights at the Museum: April Fools Shindig
Get fooled by a street-style magician, dance to live music, enter the disco cave, see a planetarium show or talk with a curator. Will you be fooled? Cash bar for those 21+. It's happening at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

Sibelius and Shostakovich
Conductor Oriol Sans and the New Mexico Philharmonic orchestra bring the magic of the circus to the stage at Popejoy Hall. Cirque performers from programs around the world will dazzle with their acrobatics.

20th Annual César Chávez March and Celebration
The free public event celebrates César Chávez's life. The march begins at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and ends there with guest speakers, community awards, dance presentations and live music. From noon to 3 p.m.

ABQ Grand Slam Poetry Championship
The top performance poets in Albuquerque will compete at the Outpost, with the top performer competing at the National Slam in August.

Wine Chemistry Workshop
For anyone who makes wine or wants to learn about the process, a 1.5 day workshop of lectures and lab exercises will take place at the Northern New Mexico College in Espanola. Dr. Barry Gump, renowned wine analyst, will be the workshop instructor.
