Find Events and Attractions in April


April brings with it blooms and a good number of annual events. Here are some highlights of what's happening around town. The calendar events are family friendly unless otherwise noted. I'll mention it if an event is free.

Income Tax Assistance
Get tax assistance at one of the various city senior centers. Make an appointment for help from a volunteer tax assistant. Free service, paperwork required.

Rio Grande Bosque Educational Forum
The public is invited to a forum about the future of the Bosque within the Rio Grande Valley State Park. This forum will be focused on climate change and environmental education. The free event takes place at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m

Arlo Guthrie
Arlo has been touring the country in honor of his father Woody's centennial. Hear him at the KiMo Theatre. For 2014: April 3

Animal Myth Day at the Zoo
Is it silly to believe everything you hear about animals? Come learn the truth about why opossums play dead, why a zebra has stripes and how animals use patterns and behaviors to fool each other. Free with regular admission, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Elvis on the Plaza
Elvis spent time in Albuquerque, even performing at the Armory in 1956. He stayed at the Bottiger Hotel in Old Town. Celebrate his music in Old Town at the gazebo. There will be an Elvis impersonation contest, karaoke contest, classic cars, and food and drink. This is a free event, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

First Friday Fractals
Art and science meet under the planetarium dome for these live presentations on fractals.

First Friday ARTScrawl
With over 20 different galleries throughout the city participating, you can choose which ones to visit to find out what's happening with guilds, individual artists and ongoing shows. This is a free event.

Jungle Book
The Cardboard Playhouse presents The Jungle Book, a tale of a boy and his jungle bear. See it at the North 4th Theatre.

Yesterday Once More: A Tribute to the Carpenters
The music of the Carpenters will be enhanced with behind the scenes stories and antecdotes of '70s pop culture. See it at Popejoy Hall.

Introduction to the Classics: The Brahams/Schuman Triangle
Brent Stevens of classical KHFM will host a concert that introduces the triangle of Brahms and the Schumanns. The New Mexico Philharmonic will perform at the KiMo.

de Profunids
The a capella men's ensemble will present a medley of tunes of songs from across the pond. Yankee Ditties & Celtic Aires will perform on April 5 at St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church, and April 6 at Immanuel Presbyterian.

MasterWorks of New Mexico
See the artwork of New Mexican artists in this free juried show. At the New Mexico Expo. The show is free; $5 for parking.

Sunday Chatter

NM International Auto Show

Founders Day Fiestas de Albuquerque
Join the City of Albuquerque as it celebrates its 308th birthday bash with a look at the history and culture of the city. The celebration takes place in Old Town, where there will be music, dance, food, vendors, entertainment and activities for the kids. The event is free.

School kids have off this week, but there are plenty of camps to enroll them in to keep them busy.

3rd Annual Hip Hop Intensive
The one hour classes per age group last for one week at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Register your kids; a special performance takes place April 19.

Gathering of Nations Pow Wow
The annual gathering features over 3,000 Indian dancers, singers and artists from over 500 North American tribes. Nothing less than an extravaganza, with dances, traditional and contemporary music, Miss Indian World contest, and Indian Trader’s Market. For when you can’t be there, listen via Gathering of Nations Internet Radio. Re-entry is available with purchase of a two day pass.

Garden Fair and Plant Sale
If you love gardening, this is a must-see event at the Albuquerque Garden Center. Local gardeners sell flowers, bedding plants, vegetables, daylilies and dispense gardening advice. This is a good bet for purchasing plants that will thrive in a southwestern climate. There will be a bake sale as well. Get there early for the best selection. The event is free.

Bike Swap
Need a new bike, or want to trade an old one? Need bike parts? Head to the annual Bike Abq bike swap. Find the vintage bike, racing bike or kids' bike you need. Check in for those selling bikes is April 24 and 25.

Renaissance Faire
Knights, damsels join in the fun of the inaugural Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. The Society for Creative Anachronism will have demonstrations, dancing and food. Don't forget the mead. Kids can fight a knight and local artists will have wares for sale. Find it at the Balloon Museum.

Paint Horse Spring Sensation
Enjoy horses and their riders at the New Mexico Paint horse show. Free at the indoor horse arena, New Mexico Expo.

The Albuquerque Youth Symphony orchestra will perform at Popejoy Hall, with young musicians performing.
