New Mexico Italian Film Festival

For eight days, the Italian Film Fest offers Italian films along with food and drink, all to benefit the UNM Children’s Hospital. The film festival has events at different locations, such as the South Broadway Cultural Center and the Lobo Theater. This is the festival’s third year. Watch for opening galas that feature the likes of the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dr. Larry Crumpler of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science will present a lecture on the work he has done as part of the Mars exploration team. Dr. Crumpler works as a scientist on the Spirit rover team, and as part of the HiRISE mission with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Spirit still traverses the Martian terrain, sending data back to Earth, and the HiRISE mission is hot on the trail of mapping the planet's surface. Learn how field geology happens on other worlds.

The Aldo Leopold Centennial Celebration and Aldo Leopold Forest Dedication

Albuquerque’s Rio Grande Valley State Park will dedicate the Aldo Leopold Forest today at a new site dedicated to the man many consider to be the father of wildlife ecology. Aldo Leopold spent many years in New Mexico, and loved the cottonwoods. The Rio Grande State Park already has a loop trail named after the famous ecologist, and now an area north of the trail will carry his name as well. Use the Pueblo Montano Picnic Area at Montano and Coors to park. The ceremony site will be a short walk over the river to the ceremony site.
