By , About.com Guide

The International Year of Astronomy takes place in 2009. One of its major goals is to spark an interest girls to pursue careers in science and astronomy through a worldwide series of She is an Astronomer events. On Sunday, August 9, 2009, Albuquerque area girls had a chance to meet with female scientists and astronomers to learn about their professions.

More than 350 attended the event at the Open Space Visitor Center. Girls met and talked with female scientists who explained their chosen professions. There were geologists, astronomers, meteorite experts, astrobiologists and amateur astronomers on hand to tell girls about the wonders of science. Girls enjoyed hands on activities and looked at the sun through a solar filter, some for the first time.
