Harwood Art Center:
The Harwood Art Center is a hub for community arts. Its programs include youth arts, education, exhibitions, community events and creative sustainability. The majority of programs take place at the main building, located at the corner of 7th and Mountain. There is also an art studio at the corner of 6th and Mountain. Outreach programs happen at neighborhood locations and throughout the state. For example, the Wells Park Community Garden is overseen by the Harwood Art Center.
Galleries and Events
The Harwood has several galleries with revolving exhibits. Receptions for the shows take place the first Friday of each month in coordination with the city-wide Albuquerque Artscrawl.
The Harwood also plays host to Burque Bop, live music for grown-ups that also welcomes families. The ongoing, monthly event takes place every third Friday of the month at 6 p.m. Dancing is encouraged.
Classes
The Harwood Art School has art classes for adults and teens 15 and older. Classes include but are not limited to weekly drop in drawing classes with models, oil painting, papermaking, jewelry making, fiber arts, printmaking, etching, plein air and stitching.
Community classes range from video arts to dance and yoga and Qi Gong. A monthly filmmaker gathering covers topics such as how to pitch your film idea.
Studio and Space Rentals
Studio rentals are available, as well as spaces to rent for community workshops. You'll find artist studios, classrooms, community spaces, a darkroom, and spces for theater, dance and performance arts.
In addition, Robin's Kitchen is located in the center and is open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch. The kitchen features healthy soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts.
A Bit of Background
The Harwood Art Center began as a community outreach program for Escuela del Sol Montessori school. The school is located directly behind the center, and the children often collaborate on programs taking place at the center. The neighborhood has a diverse mix of races and income levels and is conveniently located near downtown and Old Town.
