University of New Mexico (UNM), the Largest New Mexico University

Campus:

The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque has three campuses. Main campus houses the majority of the university's buildings, and is just over 200 acres. North campus at 269 acres has the medical school and university hospital, as well as the law school. South campus at 289 acres includes Science and Technology Park, parking, and the sports arenas. All three campuses can be reached by shuttle or car. Main campus is the most condensed and easily accessible by foot.

Location:

The main campus is bounded by Lomas Boulevard on the north, Central Avenue on the south, University Boulevard on the west, and Girard Boulevard on the east.
The North Campus is bounded by Lomas on the south, Girard on the east, University on the west, and Indian School on the north.
The South Campus has interspersed buildings around the intersection of University Boulevard and Avenida Cesar Chavez.

Branch Campuses:

The University of New Mexico has branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Valencia and Taos. Its newest branch, UNM West, is in Rio Rancho.

Reputation:

UNM strives to have as many state residents enter the school as possible. Some of its programs, such as the law school and family medicine program, have a very good reputation. UNM is respected as a top-notch research institution.

Lobo Athletics:

The Lobos are the wildly popular University of New Mexico athletic teams. Football and basketball have die hard fans, and the Lady Lobos basketball and volleyball teams are popular as well.
The university area bars and restaurants, and the city's sports bars get packed with fans every game day.
University of New Mexico athletics colors are silver and crimson. Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy, two large gray wolves, are the official team mascots.

UNM Then and Now:

The University of New Mexico was founded in 1889 and its first graduating class was in 1894. UNM currently has 26,000 students, 6,900 faculty and staff, and 12 colleges and schools with over 215 areas of study.

Lobo Traditions:

  • Every year in early December, the main campus is decorated with thousands of luminarias in the spirit of the season.
  • At Lobo football games, a cannon shot is heard when the team takes the field, or scores a touchdown.
  • It's a tradition to make a Lobo Head by extending the second and fifth fingers and touching thumb to the third and fourth finger, while yelling, "Everyone's a Lobo! Woof!"
  • Lobo Day takes place every February 28, the founding date of the University in 1889.
