Lobo football began in 1892. The Lobos participate in the Mountain West Conference and hold their games at University Stadium. The team's last bowl appearance was in 2007 at the New Mexico Bowl, where it beat Nevada, 23-0.

About University Stadium
The stadium has a total seating capacity of 38,723. Its surface is grass. The most crowded Lobo game was on September 17, 2005, with 44,760 attending. The game was against archrival New Mexico State.

Quick Facts:

  • Head coach is Mike Locksley. 2009 is Locksley’s first year with the team.
  • The first season for Lobo football was in 1892.
  • For the 2008 season, 6 games were played at home, with an average attendance of 29,712.
  • The last bowl appearance for the Lobos was in 2007 at the New Mexico Bowl, where they beat Nevada 23-0.
  • The school colors are now silver and crimson. In the 1890s, they were black and gold, until a UNM arts professor suggested crimson to signify the desert. Students who took picnics in the Sandias noticed the Rio Grande cut a silver swath through the landscape, so silver was added to the crimson. For a while turquoise was also part of team colors, but since the 1980s, the current colors have remained.
  • Lobo Louie and Lobo Lucy are the UNM team mascots.
  • UNM got the nickname "Lobo" in 1920. After trying to find a suitable icon for their sports teams, the Spanish word for wolf was chosen. The Lobo, of course, is the leader of the pack, and known for its cunning and ability to survive in a team.

    Getting to the Game

    Rail Runner
The Rail Runner has a Lobo stop close to Avenida Cesar Chavez where the city’s ABQ Ride buses stop and pick up fans to take them to University Stadium. After the game, fans are bused to the Downtown station, where trains take riders either north or south. Although the trains leave immediately, there are later trains for those who want to spend a little time enjoying Albuquerque’s downtown nightlife.

    ABQ Ride
The city offers an ABQ Ride bus to the stadium. Park in Lot T at the SW corner of University and and Lomas. A $3 round-trip ticket gets passengers to the front of the stadium.

    UNM Students Shuttle
UNM students can be picked up via shuttle from three locations: Dane Smith Hall, Redondo Village and ITS. This free service begins two hours before kickoff and returns to the three drop off locations for one hour after each game.

    Sandoval County Bus Stops
Living in Rio Rancho has its perks, and these buses are just one of them. It's easy to attend the games without the hassle of a drive. There are two pickup locations; find one that's right for you.

Take the shuttle from O'Hare's Grille & Pub at 4100 Southern SE. The bus departs one hour and 15 minutes prior to game time, so be sure to get there ahead of time.

You can also get a bus from the McDonald's at 1390 Rio Rancho Road. The bus leaves at 4:15 p.m.

Both Sandoval county buses cost $5 for Lobo Club members, and $7 for non-members. Parking If you decide to drive to the game, note that it is free to vehicles with 4 or more passengers, but if there are less than 4 in your car, the cost per car is $5.

If you have a UNM parking pass for one of the lots near the stadium, this charge does not apply.
