Affordable Housing in Albuquerque

Whether you are a senior on limited income, someone transitioning from difficult circumstances, or live below the median income, it is possible to find affordable housing in Albuquerque. The city has several agencies to help people get on their feet or into stable situations. Here's a listing of the more affordable complexes to be found, both for rental and for purchase.

1. Arbolera de Vida

Albuquerque, NM 87104

The Sawmill Community Land Trust has homes for sale for those who are income qualified, or earning 80% or less than the Albuquerque area median income (AMI). Those earning more than the AMI can purchase homes at market rate, and cannot qualify for subsidies. A variety of homes are for sale: duplexes, single family attached or detached, and townhomes. Some are two story homes. Downpayment assistance is available for qualified buyers.

2. City Public Housing

Multiple locations

The city of Albuquerque provides assistance to low income Albuquerque residents. Housing units can found throughout Albuquerque, providing decent housing for low income families as well as the elderly and disabled.

3. Downtown @ 700 2nd

The single resident occupant apartment complex is located downtown near bus lines and shopping. Residents have a courtyard, community garden, a library, computer room, a meeting room, and indoor and outdoor common spaces. The ground floor housses businesses, such as The Coffee Shop, which is used to train formerly homeless people to get back in the job market. The complex is LEED certified and has solar arrays and a graywater system. The complex is offered through the Supportive Housing Coalition of New Mexico.

4. East Central

Albuquerque, NM 87108

The complex has 11 units, eight of which are studios, and three one bedroom apartments. Rent is at market value, and includes utilities. There is a laundry facility on site, and Section 8 is accepted.

5. New Life Homes

Multiple locations

New Life Homes provides affordable housing to people with special needs. They have eight apartment complexes around the city where people with mental illness, physical disabilities, the elderly, veterans and those who are homeless can find a place to live. New Life complexes have community rooms, computers, computer training, onsite managers, and food provision through Roadrunner Food Bank. There are ongoing social activities.

6. Redlands Apartments

5901 Redlands NW Albuquerque, NM

The apartment complex provides subsidized housing through Section 8. People with disabilities who want to live in an independent setting can do so. There are 17 one bedroom units, and the complex features a community room, laundry facility and landscaped common areas. Rents are 30% or less of the tenant's income. The Redlands are on Albuquerque's westside.

7. Sawmill Lofts

The Sawmill Community Land Trust provides residents at the Lofts with 60 one, two and three bedroom affordable live/work spaces. There is a community garden, off street parking, an oversized elevator, on-site laundry, and a multi-purpose room as well as a meeting room. Water, sewage and refuse are paid. Tenants can live and work in the same space, and are encouraged to do so; the complex was designed with the artist in mind. There are 28 one bedroom units, 18 two bedroom units and 14 three bedroom units. Rents are below market for eligible applicants. The complex is in the Sawmill neighborhood.

8. Silver Gardens

The mixed-income apartment complex has 121 apartments and is located in the heart of downtown. The award-winning green structure is near the Alvarado Transportation Center, between First and Second Streets. There is elevator access to all floors of this four story complex, as well as a 24 hour fitness center, playground, clubroom, laundry facilities and a parking garage. Apartments range from studios to two bedrooms.

9. Sunport Plaza Apartments

1313 Wellesley SE
Albuquerque, NM 87106

The complex features 80 units for residents who have incomes at or below 50% area median income. There are studio and one bedroom apartments and Section 8 assistance is taken. The complex also has a laundry facility and on street parking.

10. The Artisan at Sawmill Village

1751 Bellamah NW
Albuquerque, NM 87104

Part of the Sawmill Community Land Trust, the Artisan Village is the first phase of Sawmill Village. The three-story, 60 unit complex has one, two and three bedroom apartments. Each unit has a patio or balcony, energy efficient appliances, and hookups for cable and washer/dryer. Handicapped accessible units are available. There is a private parking area, community garden, and a playground. Trash, sewer and water are included in the rent. The ground floor of the complex has commercial spaces for small businesses.
